Discover Your Business Idea

Posted on 12 October 2011

Most of us don’t fancy ourselves as entrepreneurs. Some consider it runs in the family, either you are born with it, or you are not. I believe this is an excuse to cover our fear or venturing out to fulfill our dreams. Entrepreneurship can be learnt, through study and starting small.

The biggest obstacle some folk’s face is in deciding what it is they really want to do. Some folks even believe that they have no talents or skills to offer. Nothing can be furthest from the truth. Low self-esteem leads to self-depreciation and eventually a denial of you skills, capabilities and talents. You start to believe that you have nothing to offer that is good enough for others to pay for. If you believe this long enough, you start accepting this lie as a fact. When you get to this point, you can truly sincerely say that you have no talents.

The fact that you buried your talent does not mean that it doesn’t exist. It does. If you dig them up and dust it up, you are back in business. They starting point is to admit to yourself that you are a human being, and you came to this planet for a purpose. You are not a flotsam or jetsam. Everybody is somebody. Everybody has something to offer. You arrived here loaded, equipped with God given talents, dreams and purpose.

If you can go pass this hump, you are ready to proceed. If you cannot, then you need to have a chat with somebody who believes in you, or maybe a counselor.

The next step is to take a long look inside of you.

Who are you? What do you have a natural flair for?

What do you love doing most? If money were not an issue, what would you rather do?

This journey of self-discovery may take you back down memory lane, back to a time when you once had dreams. What are those dreams?

Take A Walk On The Wild Side
Close your eyes for a moment. Board your dream mobile and take a ride to the land of your dreams. When you arrive, alight and take a look around. What do you see?

Think about a perfect day. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? What are you wearing?

Stick around a little bit. Enjoy it while it lasts. Take in the details. Look at what you have (talents and abilities), take a second look at what you are doing in your dream world. If they match, then you are in business. You’ve got your business idea right there.

Mind you, I am not talking about a perfect vacation, but a perfect working day. If you got that right, then it is time to board your dream mobile and return to reality.

Discovering your business idea is not a rocket science. It is simply doing what you love, and doing it well. Most people think of a business idea as something that must make money a few weeks after opening day. Consequently they fall into the trap of doing something they don’t have a natural flair for, just for the sake of making money.

Whatever you love doing, if you do it excellently well, the world will make a beaten path to your door. It is a matter of time. All you need is to use your brain, and look at innovative and unique ways of packaging your offering, so that you fill a gap in the market place. You can create a niche and excel.

It starts with knowing that you have something to offer, and package it such a way that people are willing to pay for it. You don’t need some esoteric revelation. Just be yourself, and believe in your self, then you are in business.
